Decluttering: 5 Tips for a Simplified 2025
There is something about the start of the new year that brings a sense of freshness, a clean slate. It’s a time of reflection and getting clear. Creating space. Letting go. This isn’t just about tidying up the house, but also decluttering our mental load. By knowing what we really want, we can make space for what really matters. Here are some ways I have learned to create space:
1. Let it go
Decluttering isn't limited to physical stuff—it's also about mental and life decluttering. The beginning of the year is an ideal moment to think about the behaviors, relationships, and commitments that aren't serving you anymore. Get rid of what feels heavy or brings you down. When we clear the clutter—be it a bad habit or an outdated belief- we make space for growth and new beginnings. .
2. Reflect
The beginning of the year is a wonderful time for setting intentions. What do you really want to achieve this year, and how do you want to feel? I've found that understanding my core values (like health, family, or creativity) assists me in making choices that align with what's most important. When you know your "why," you know where you are heading.
3. Simplify
I heard a saying that if it's not a “hell yes” it’s a no. Leaning into this has been a game changer! One of the biggest stress and clutter sources is overcommitting. It's tempting to say "yes" to everything, but that often results in burnout. One thing I've learned is the importance of saying no to what doesn’t align with my priorities. I sometimes just place an “X” in my calendar to not schedule anything on that day for my own sanity!
4. Take it slow
Big changes can be intimidating, so I’ve learned to concentrate on small victories. Starting with one small step—like decluttering a drawer, organizing your inbox, or setting aside 5 minutes each day for reflection—helps build momentum. As you start to see progress, you'll feel more motivated to tackle bigger changes. And soon enough it will become habit!
5. Gratitude
Sometimes, the path to clarity and fresh starts feels slow… and that’s okay! Celebrate the small victories and be patient with the process. I’ve found that being grateful for the small moments—like a quiet cup of coffee or a mid-day walk —helps me stay grounded and open to the changes I’m making.
The new year is a beautiful chance to create space—both physically and mentally—for the things that matter most. By letting go, getting clear on your values, simplifying your schedule, and celebrating small victories, you’ll set yourself up for a year of purpose and clarity.
Remember, this is your journey. Be kind to yourself, and take one step at a time. If you need a friend, I'm here to back you up!
